New video made about Donetsk airport ‘cyborgs’
A new video featuring photographs of the Ukrainian soldiers defending Donetsk airport has been released by Los Angeles Times photographer and journalist Sergei Loiko.
The airport has been the site of fierce fighting between Ukrainian forces and pro-Russian insurgents for several months. The Ukrainian soldiers have been nicknamed “the Cyborgs” by their enemies for their grim and determined defense of the facility, which comes under heavy attack almost daily.
For this video the journalist used photos of the Ukrainian soldiers who continue to fight for the airport, which the headquarters of Ukraine’s Anti-Terrorist Operation describes as a “strategic object.”
The billion-dollar facility, the restoration of which was completed only in 2012, is now largely in ruins.
"Our units located at that battle ground are ready to respond to any challenges that may arise during the protection and defense of the strategic object," the headquarters of the Anti-Terrorist Operation said recently.
