NSDC: Militants could try to trap Ukrainian forces in Debaltsevo
Russian-backed insurgents could attack Lysychansk and Stanytsia Luhanska in an attempt to encircle Ukrainian forces in Debaltsevo, National Security and Defense Council spokesman Andriy Lysenko said at a briefing in Kyiv on Wednesday, according to an UNIAN correspondent.
"The situation in the ATO zone remains tense,” Lysenko said.
“In particular, for the last day, Russian mercenaries fired on Ukrainian positions in near Debaltsevo, Donetsk, and in Luhansk and near the Bahmutka highway," he said.
"An analysis of the data indicates possible military actions in the direction of Lysychansk and Stanytsia Luhanska. The insurgents have concentrated their efforts on establishing control over the Lysychansk-Luhansk road, and on capturing the right bank of the Siverskiy Donets River. There is still a probability of an attack from Russian territory in the direction of the village of Nyzhnia Olkhova in the Stanychno-Luhanska area. There is a threat of the intensified actions by the Russian-backed insurgents, who could make an attempt to encircle Ukrainian units near Debaltsevo."
"The command of the ATO forces is taking all of the appropriate measures to neutralize these threats," Lysenko said.
