National support for Ukraine’s potential NATO bid surged in the wake of Russia’s annexation of Crimea and the following aggression in the east of Ukraine this year, Ukraine Today reports.

The October poll for the Foundation for Democratic Initiatives found that over four out of 10 Ukrainians believe joining NATO would ensure the country's security, while only 13% of Ukrainians supported NATO in 2012.

Meanwhile, Moscow is strongly opposed to Ukrainian membership and sees NATO as the most serious threat to Russia, according to the country’s new military doctrine.
