Orthodox Ukrainians celebrate Annunciation Day on April 7
According to custom, birds are freed from cages
On April 7, the Orthodox Church celebrates one of its biggest holidays – the Annunciation Day of the Mother of God.
The Annunciation Day is one of 12 the most important orthodox holidays. It was established in memory of the Annunciation of the Virgin Mary that she will become the Mother of Jesus Christ.
From the earliest times, Ukrainians used to free birds from cages on this day, as a symbol of freedom for all the world. It also symbolizes the Heaven, which opens for human souls.
On this day people also should not work, and should throw away old stuff.
