Number of cancer patients in Ukraine exceeds 1 million people
Director of the National Cancer Institute Olena Kolesnyk says that the number of cancer patients in Ukraine exceeds one million people, and 70-80% of them need to undergo radiotherapy.
Every third or fourth male and every fifth female in Ukraine face increased cancer risks, Kolesnyk said during the official ribbon-cutting ceremony of the Ukrainian Tomotherapy Center in Kirovohrad on Wednesday.
"This is a very large share of patients. 70-80% of cancer patients need radiotherapy. From 60% to 90% of medical equipment in our country is in very poor condition, the material and technical base is extremely deficient. The creation of innovative cancer treatment centers on the basis of public-private partnership is of vital importance to Ukraine. This is the direction the Cancer Institute should be developed as a big innovative center with the assistance of both the state and private partners," she said.
