Also, for someone in a wheelchair for example – the dog will learn to open doors, pick up small items and just be there as a companion – a soldier's best friend, away from the combat zone, Ukraine Today reports.

The project's leaders say the Ukrainian dog trainers are doing an excellent job. However, combatting the stigma of mental illness in the military is still on the agenda outside the training grounds, to prevent war veterans from turning to alcohol, drugs or heavy medication in an attempt to forget the horrors of war.
