Celebrating Jewish New Year in Uman
Nearly 30,000 hasidic jews have come to the Ukrainian town of Uman to celebrate Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year, according to Ukraine Today.
Every year, the influx of pilgrims to this tiny Ukrainian town gives a huge boost to local businesses, while this year a Jewish organization visiting Uman donated over $13,000 to the Ukrainian army, which is fighting the Russian-backed insurgency in the Ukrainian east, Ukraine Today reports.
For many, the annual pilgrimage to the grave site of Rebbe Nachman, founder of the Hasidic Breslov religious branch is about love and understanding.
A squad of police officers from Israel and hundreds of local law enforcers are in hand to provide security.
Rosh Hashanah will end in the evening of Tuesday.
