The majority of Ukrainians believe that the gas agreements with Russia are acceptable for Ukraine.

These are the results of a poll carried out by the Kyiv International Institute of Sociology.

According to the results of the poll, some 45.5% of respondents share this opinion, and another some 5.7% of those polled called the gas agreements a success.

At the same time, some 33.7% of those polled said that the gas agreements with Russia were a defeat of Ukraine.

Speaking about reasons of the gas crisis, some 42.2% of respondents said it had loomed due to the inability of President of Ukraine Victor Yushchenko to reach agreement with Russia, some 28% - a desire of Russia to seize control over the Ukrainian gas pipelines, some 24.3% - pro-western policy of Ukraine, some 19.5% - a Russia’s desire to show Europe that Ukraine is not a reliable partner, some 18.1% - Yulia Tymoshenko’s inability to reach agrement with Russia, and some 15.5% - the desire of Victor Yushchenko and some Party of Regions politicians to return an intermediary into the gas schemes.

The all-Ukrainian opinion poll was carried out on January 29 – February 5, 2009 in all regions of Ukraine. On the whole, 1642 respondents aged over 18 were interrogated. The error margin does not exceed 3.7%.
