Closing today’s meeting of the National Culture and Spirituality Council, Victor Yushchenko said he would try to encourage businessmen to support culture, according to the President’s press-office.

The Head of State opined that artists should involve entrepreneurs in funding their projects and said he hoped many rich people would take part in philanthropic initiatives if properly motivated.

“Our task is to motivate these people,” he said, reminding those present of his successful cooperation with Ukraine’s top businessmen to preserve historical sights. “I think it is wrong to rely solely on the country’s budget.”

When speaking about a program to enrich and develop culture and spirituality in Ukraine, the President said it should include up to twenty specific short-term projects.

“I think we should realistically estimate our abilities and work consistently. I believe this path is right,” he said.

Mr. Yushchenko said he was pleased with the meeting, adding that the Council members “understand that the culture issue belongs to Ukraine’s security.”
