Ukraine starting utilization of excess guns
Upon project of NATO Trust Fund
Utilization of excess guns and light armaments, upon a project of the NATO Partnership for Peace Trust Fund are starting in Kamyanets-Podilsky, Khmelnytsky region, according to Ukrinform.
The first parcel of light armaments and guns will be melted in crucible induction furnaces.
The contract on two-year utilization of 400,000 articles of light armaments and guns was signed between Ukraine and NATO on November 17, 2006.
In particular, over 200,000 of different modification items of pistols, as well as machine-guns, grenade cup discharges, antiarmor rifles, sport and training weapons, are subject to utilization.
Donor countries allocated 900,000 EUR to the project and the Ukrainian side almost 3 million UAH (one USD-5.05 UAH)
The first stage of the NATO Partnership for Peace Trust Fund, estimated for three years, was launched in 2006 when 1,000 excess shoulder-fired air-defense weapon items were utilized during June - September.
An implementation agreement between the Cabinet of ministers of Ukraine and the NATO Maintenance and Supply Agency (NAMSA) was signed on November 23, 2005.
The document provided for financial aid in utilization of 133,000 tons of armaments, 1.5 M. tons of gun items and 1,000 shoulder-fired air-defense weapon items.
