“Eighty-nine years ago, the young defenders of the newly founded Ukrainian People’s Republic wrote a new, heroic page in the history of Ukraine’s liberation movement with their blood. On January 29 of the fateful year 1918, over three hundred cadets and students passed their maturity test,” Yushchenko said.

The feat by the heroes of Kruty is an example of ardent patriotism and courage, Victor Yushchenko has said in an address honoring the heroes of Kruty, according to the President`s press-office.

“Eighty-nine years ago, the young defenders of the newly founded Ukrainian People’s Republic wrote a new, heroic page in the history of Ukraine’s liberation movement with their blood. On January 29 of the fateful year 1918, over three hundred cadets and students passed their maturity test,” he said.

“Having followed their hearts, the young men left school and defied their numerous, drilled and armed rivals, resolutely defending the right of Ukrainians to live in their own country,” he said.

The President is convinced we still have to appreciate their deed.

“We are obliged to recover the forgotten names of those heroes from oblivion and make every Ukrainian appreciate the magnitude of that exploit,” he said.

Mr. Yushchenko said the Kruty tragedy should become a “forewarning to us, present and future leaders of the Ukrainian nation, teach us wisdom, unity and sensibility in actions and decisions.”
