A shadow scheme of the gas-transport system privatization continues to operate in Ukraine.

First Deputy Secretariat Chief of Staff Arseniy Yatsenyuk said this at a teleconference with Ukrainian governors on Monday.

Yatsenyuk said: “Ukraine needs a truly independent institution regulating energy to restore order in energy prices.”

“If the National Commission for Energy Regulation receives orders from the government, there are doubts this commission should exist. It becomes a department within the Energy Ministry and performs imposed functions,” he said.

“It is very important to de-monopolize the energy sector. It becomes even more important and topical because of schemes to privatize our gas transportation system,” he said, adding that he was speaking not about the system itself but about purchases of solvent and profitable companies that deliver energy.
