President supports native language

"We must always remember that the Ukrainian is a language of our freedom"

It is important to support and promote the Ukrainian language, Victor Yushchenko said in an International Mother Language Day address to the nation on Wednesday, according to the President`s press-office.

“It is our vital challenge to carry out wise and tolerant language policies to make our native language effective and uniting. We must always remember that the Ukrainian language is a language of our freedom and our state.” 

The President said the Ukrainian nation “builds a country of fair opportunities and freedom.” He added that the governemnt must meet national, cultural and spiritual needs of Ukraine’s many minority ethnic groups. He said it was incumbent on us to respect and speak Ukrainian, as well as to respect and support other languages spoken in Ukraine and contributing to our national wealth.

Mr. Yushchenko wished Ukrainians peace and tolerance.
