President Victor Yushchenko on Friday attended a celebration in Kyiv’s House of Officers to mark the 15-year anniversary of Ukraine’s intelligence service, according to the President`s press-office.

“Your fulfill your difficult mission… worthily. Our state cannot exist effectively without your work. You are the pillar of the security and protection of the country and its citizens, and there is no exaggeration in this,” he said in a speech.

Yushchenko said he, as Ukraine’s president and supreme commander-in-chief, would spare no effort to resolve their problems. “This is not my wish or my promise. My words have and will have concrete consequences.”

The president said Ukraine needs a “modern, analytical, well equipped and highly professional intelligence service which will reliably protect its interests in the difficult and competitive external conditions.”

Yushchenko then honored some intelligence officers with state awards.
