Prime Minister of Ukraine Victor Yanukovych recognizes the historical role of Vasyl Kuk, the last Commander in Chief of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army (UPA), but he is convinced that it is impossible to bring up new generations basing on the UPA’s ideology.

According to an UNIAN correspondent, V. Yanukovych claimed this today to a news conference in Kyiv, answering a journalist’s question concerning his attitude to the activities of V. Kuk.

“Taking into consideration that this person entered the history, and, undoubtedly, is held in respect by a definite part of society in the Western Ukraine and, as they say, he lived a bright life and it is possible to agree with that”, V. Yanukovych said.

According to his opinion, the historical meaning of the activity of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army during the years of the Second World War is a controversial issue. “One may say today that it is impossible to rewrite the history. The history had already given its assessment to these events, and, undoubtedly, it is impossible to bring up the future generation basing on this ideology. This ideology also can not be an ideology of the country”, the Head of the Government stressed.
