According to the preliminary conclusion of the Prosecutor’s General Office of Ukraine, U.S. naval ship Advantage entered the Ukrainian port of Feodosia on a legal basis.
According to an UNIAN correspondent, deputy Prosecutor General Mykola Holomsha disclosed this to journalists today.
He noted that PGO received applications from Commissioner for Human Rights Nina Karpachova and CPU leader Petro Symonenko, and is carrying out inspections on these applications.
M.Holomsha noted that, in line with article 1 of the Law of Ukraine “On access of military formations to the Ukrainian territory”, the parliament’s concept is necessary only to allow the access of ships, equipped with armaments. However, according to preliminary inspections, Advantage is a commercial ship. “It is not a battle ship, which paid a visit at the Ukrainian territory”, M.Holomsha said.
He also stressed that in 1995 Ukraine joined “Partnership for Peace” NATO Program, and in 200 the parliament ratified this agreement with a respective law.
As UNIAN reported earlier, pro-Russian opposition parties Tuesday railed against President Viktor Yushchenko`s government for allowing a U.S. naval ship to enter a Ukrainian port, calling it a threat to the nation. According to AP, the USS Advantage`s arrival in the Crimean port of Feodosiya sparked protests and left the government scrambling to explain that it was coming as part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization Partnership for Peace program and was only bringing equipment for exercises this summer in the Black Sea.
