Ukrainian president Victor Yushchenko has opposed the idea that the European Football Championships in 2012 will be played in five Polish cities but only three in Ukraine.

“Kyiv will not allow for an unequal division of cities hosting the Football Championships in 2012,” Yushchenko said during the meeting of the council coordinating preparations to the tournament, Monday. “This is a fundamental issue of us,” he added.

It has been speculated that due the finance crisis, which is hitting Ukraine particularly badly, some cities originally penciled in to host the championships will not be able to raise the investment – meaning that Poland will have to take up more of the slack.
