The programme, now in its 29th year, seeks to promote the correct usage of the Polish language, and is funded by the Polish National Agency for Academic Exchange, according to Radio Poland.

Meanwhile, the runner-up was from Slovenia, while a second Ukrainian and a Croat tied for third place.

In addition to the competition, the programme organises an intensive 100-hour Polish-language course and teaches participants about Polish literature, culture, art and history in conjunction with the University of Silesia in the southern Polish city of Katowice.

This year 220 people entered the programme from a variety of countries, including Argentina, Brazil, China, India and Singapore.
