Vice-President Frans Timmermans says the EC will perform a "preliminary assessment" under the EU's "rule of law mechanism," Ukraine Today reported.
Changes to Poland's constitutional court and new media laws have led to accusations that Poland's socially conservative Law and Justice party, led by Jaroslaw Kaczynski, was following the illiberal path of Hungarian prime minister Viktor Orban - who has based his model of governance on Russia's Putin regime.
Under the new media law the treasury minister now has the right to appoint heads of state-run broadcasters.
