Yanukovych: European choice is a key priority

Prime Minister of Ukraine Viktor Yanukovych continues his working visit to the USA, according to the press-office of the Cabinet of Ministers.
European choice is a key priority of foreign policy of Ukraine, the Ukrainian Prime Minister Viktor Yanukovych stated while addressing the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.
Today Ukraine faces difficulties of transition to new political system and the Ukrainian power must learn to speak with a common voice at international level, Viktor Yanukovych said. At the same time he stressed that the leaders of the state have a common view on the foreign policy – European choice as a key priority of Ukraine.
As regards Ukraine’s membership in the EU, Prime Minister believes that it is inexpedient to insist on soonest possible EU membership.
In Viktor Yanukovych’s opinion, it is necessary to focus on pragmatic cooperation with the EU, first of all, to initiate negotiations on creation of free trade zone after Ukraine acceeded to the World Trade Organization.
PM believes that during his premiership Ukraine will approach closely EU membership or initiate negotiations, perhaps.
We have determined a real cooperation mechanism with the parliamentary majority, Prime Minister noted. Among 20 necessary laws we shall adopt only 2 during the second reading. In other words, we have no doubts, Prime Minister disclosed.
According to Mr. Yanukovych, Ukraine’s accedence to the WTO will be a powerful signal for the world community. “Everybody will benefit by accedence – the Ukrainian exporters strengthen positions at international markets, increase of sound competitiveness at the Ukrainian market, improvement of macroeconomic showings, GDP growth, creation of new work places”, Prime Minister stated.
At the same time Viktor Yanukovych noted that Ukraine intends at that to protect development of home market in full compliance with regulations and procedures of the GATT-WTO system.
