René van der Linden, President of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe, warmly welcomed the agreement reached between Ukrainian President Viktor Yushchenko and the country’s Prime Minister, Viktor Yanukovych on the holding of parliamentary elections on 30th September 2007, according to the PACE Communication Unit.
President van der Linden expressed particular satisfaction at Mr. Yushchenko’s conclusions that the divergence between them on the matter can thereby be considered “finished” through this compromised solution.
“In my talks last week with both political leaders, I stressed the need to avoid any type of confrontation over the issue, in the overall interest of Ukraine, its citizens and Europe as a whole. This has now been heeded, demonstrating their sense of responsibility for the future of the country. The Parliamentary Assembly and the Council of Europe will continue to offer their avalaibility in assisting Ukraine with all the instruments at the disposal of the Organisation, including in observing the elections upon invitation.”
