Ukrainian President Victor Yushchenko and his French counterpart, Nicolas Sarkozy, have reached a "strategic understanding" on Ukraine’s EU membership prospects, Oleksandr Chalyy, Yushchenko’s top aide, said at a press briefing on Monday, according to the President`s press-office. He added that Ukrainian and French diplomats were now discussing how to implement last week’s agreement between the two leaders.

He said Yushchenko had invited Sarkozy to visit Ukraine and added that the French leader would come to Kyiv in the first half of 2008. (France will start holding the European Union’s rotating presidency on July 1).

Chalyy said both presidents would discuss Yushchenko’s Common Europe: Common Memory initiative then and had already agreed to patronize an exhibition of Scythian gold in the Louvre Museum in 2008.
