President Victor Yushchenko has left on a two-day visit to Lithuania, according to the President`s press-office.
Yushchenko will take part in an energy summit in Vilnius. It is expected to be attended by the leaders of Azerbaijan, Georgia, Latvia, Lithuania and Romania, Estonia’s prime minister, ministers from Belgium, Denmark, Georgia, Kazakhstan, Poland, Spain, the Netherlands, France, Sweden, Turkey and Great Britain, and the EU energy commissioner. The summit will focus on how to develop the European Union’s energy policy, resolve global energy challenges, boost trans-Atlantic energy cooperation and develop energy ties with Russia, Central Asia and the Caspian region. An energy transit roundtable will be held during the summit on Ukraine’s initiative.
Ukraine, Georgia, Azerbaijan, Poland and Lithuania are expected to sign an agreement on enhanced cooperation in the energy sector. The document is seen as a next step in the implementation of the Odesa-Brody-Plock-Gdansk oil pipeline project.
Yushchenko will also attend a meeting of the GUAM member states to mark the organization’s 10th anniversary and will hold face-to-face talks with his counterparts from Poland, Lithuania and Azerbaijan.
