The municipal council of Italian capital Rome has adopted a resolution recognizing the 1932-1933 famine in Ukraine as an act of genocide, according to Kyiv Weekly.

In a statement, Ukraine`s Foreign Ministry reported that the resolution obliges the mayor of Rome and the heads of the relevant departments of the Mayor`s Office to take measures to honor the memory of the victims of the 1932-1933 famine in Ukraine.

In particular, the relevant measures will be held as part of Memorial Day, which the Rome Mayor`s Office annually commemorates on January 27.

The municipal council`s deputies representing Rome`s ethnic minorities initiated the resolution.

«This document is exclusively of political importance in the context of continuation of the work on recognition of the 1932-1933 famine as an act of genocide at the governmental and parliamentary levels in Italy,» the MFA statement says.
