"As for Mr. Medianyk. If there is no sufficient evidence, he will not be prosecuted. It is my deep belief that that the prosecutor's office can and should release people if there is insufficient evidence. I'm sure that Mr. Medianyk will soon be released from custody because we have not gathered enough evidence of his guilt, and it is absolutely normal in a civilized country," Lutsenko told journalists in Kyiv on Saturday, a UNIAN correspondent reported.

As UNIAN reported earlier, on August 7, Ukrainian Prosecutor General Yuriy Lutsenko announced the arrest of Medianyk.

"As part of Yefremov's case, the PGO detained another person involved – MP from the Party of Regions Volodymyr Medianyk," he stated.

According to the PGO, Medianyk is suspected of deliberately acting to change the boundaries of the territory of Ukraine, in violation of the Constitution, which led to some deaths and other serious consequences, and is charged under Article 110 Part 3 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine. He is also suspected of providing organizational and other assistance in the creation and the activities of the Luhansk People's Republic terrorist organization and is charged under Article 258-3 Part 1 of the Criminal Code.

On August 10, Lutsenko said that Medianyk had acted as an intermediary between the Ukrainian side and terrorists after their capture of the SBU and the State Administration buildings in Luhansk.

Medianyk was MP from the Party of Regions from 2012 to 2014.
