Top officials of the National Bank of Ukraine (NBU) have met with Acting Assistant Secretary of the U.S. Treasury for International Finance and Development Geoffrey Okamoto.

"Great conversation today between U.S. Treasury Acting Undersecretary Geoffrey Okamoto and National Bank Governor Yakiv Smolii," the U.S. Embassy in Kyiv wrote on Twitter on September 17.

Both sides agree that the NBU's independence is vital to Ukraine's financial stability and attractiveness to foreign investors.

The embassy also posted a photo featuring Yakiv Smolii, NBU First Deputy Governor Kateryna Rozhkova, and NBU Deputy Governor Dmytro Sologub.

As UNIAN reported earlier, the NBU Board on September 17 again spoke out in support of Former Governor of the NBU Valeriya Gontareva, whose country house in the village of Horenychi outside Kyiv had been destroyed amid an apparent arson attack.

The police qualified the incident as deliberate destruction of property.

President Volodymyr Zelensky said he expected the police to investigate the incident as soon as possible.

The NBU former governor now resides and works in London, the United Kingdom. On August 26, 2019, she was struck by a car when crossing the road in London and was hospitalized.

Gontareva also said that on the night of September 5, the car of her eldest son's wife whose name is also Valeriya Gontareva was doused with gasoline and burned in central Kyiv.
