U.S. State Secretary Mike Pompeo has pledged "full assistance, including military assistance," to Ukraine after Sunday's confrontation between Ukraine and Russia, that's according to Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko.

Poroshenko told CNN's Christiane Amanpour that during a recent phone call Pompeo pledged "full coordination" on protecting Ukrainian sovereignty following the clash with Russia.

Asked about the U.S. reaction to the latest developments around the Kerch Strait, Poroshenko noted a clear position voiced by U.S. Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley. During an emergency UN Security Council meeting to defuse rising tensions after the confrontation, Haley called the incident "yet another reckless Russian escalation" and demanded that the Kremlin release the sailors captured by Russian coast guards and taken in custody.

Also, Poroshenko noted NATO's support of Ukraine in this regard.
